Back to the present. Here’s one, courtesy of the ever-timely Said The Gramophone, that I like quite a bit. STG seems to follow an agenda of not shouting up artists who are already getting plenty of face time on other blogs but rather posting more obscure stuff that actually creates a mood. This one is no exception. The NYC artist formerly known as Malmo has taken on the catchy, if not a bit tounge-twisterish, new persona of Blackball False, Truth! Mmm…sounds more like an album title but I’ll roll with it only because the songs are so darn wonderful. I’m hearing all kinds of influences that range from early 80s synth/drum driven post-punk, 90s low-fi and some guitar based dreampop, genres that, while having been previously beaten to death, sound fresh on BF, T!’s shortform album, Auks, which is being offered for free here.
I had a hard time deciding which one to post so lets go with the title track. The really cool thing about this song is that you think it’s over at the 3 minute mark and then bam!, it starts up again for another minute-15 seconds. Highly recommended.
