Flying Nun Retrospective DAY 3 - Expendables "The Man With No Desire"

Sorry for the late post today. In fact, Ms. DB and I were half-way through a movie when I said, "S%#t! I forgot to put up a song!"

In any event, I admit that this song, heard for the first time about ten years ago when I pulled a scratched-up 45” with the Flying Nun label from the used bin in Reckless Records, was the driving force behind me deciding to do this week-long review because I was so looking forward to posting it. In fact, I’d say that the Expendables’ “The Man With No Desire” is arguably the greatest song found on the 25th Anniversary 4-disc set. If not the greatest, then it certainly, without a doubt, has the greatest vocal performance courtesy of the greatest voice on the Flying Nun roster.

Fronted by Jay Clarkson, the Expendables adopted a very distinctive low-fi jangle, almost jazzy, approach to their music reminiscent of perhaps, say, a Roy Orbinson or Nina Simone. The song itself is absolutely haunting to the point where I have a tendancy to play it over and over and over again, such as I have been doing while typing this up.

This is a great series! I am lusting over that box set. Enjoyed the Keene Bros. track you posted the other day too.

This box set is so fantastic, isn't it? It's totally rekindled my deep love of Flying Nun and all things kiwi. Jay Clarkson is so terribly overlooked, I'd love to hear the rest of the Expendables stuff that has never seen the digital light of day. In the meantime, be sure to get the Breathing Cage demos disc from Failsafe Records!
