It's Walker!

"It’s almost as if a law enforcement system based on vague fears of an immortal ghost who lurks in the jungle isn’t particularly effective in getting at the root causes of crime."

What Flashed Through My Brain Just Now

This sentence, in the voice of whoever originally said it (Google is no help):
It's hard to dance on the bodies of your dead friends!
My first thought is GWAR, but I don't think I ever actually saw them -- they played Vassar when I was there, but I was doing security outside.

Perhaps it's a movie quote.

It's disconcerting to hit the age when your brain, like your closets, has things in it that you don't remember putting there.

Unfathomable

The Washington Post's Wonkblog had a great post recently on what China's hackers are looking for when they rifle through American digital assets:

The Chinese look at Washington, and they think there must be some document somewhere, some flowchart saved on a computer in the basement of some think tank, that lays it all out. Because in China, there would be. In China, someone would be in charge. There would be a plan somewhere. It would probably last for many years. It would be at least partially followed. But that’s not how it works in Washington.
It's quite amusing to note that chaos and dissension may be our USP.

A friend of mine used to do a similar joke -- he'd rant along the lines of "Millions of people have tried to understand what's in my brain, but not a one ever could! And do you know why? Because there's nothing there!" To sell that, he always ended with one finger pointed at his head and a maniacal look in his eyes that denied any possibility that he realized what he just said. Perhaps we can get Joe Biden to do the same to the Chinese; he's probably the top government guy right now who could best put it over.

No Context! Not Safe For Work!

"There are advantages to screwing girls who don't have a crippling fear of penises."

From the quite swell Menage a 3 webcomic, which is not at all about a menage a trois. But it's about plenty of other kinds of sex.

Amazon Is Special

"[T]there's a reason why most companies don't employ the "provide a great service at such a great price that we don't actually earn any profits" business strategy, namely that shareholders typically want to own shares in profitable companies."
- Matthew Yglesias, Amazon Is a Great Company Because It Has the Most Generous Shareholders in the World

OK, one more, from further on:
"Wall Street has essentially granted Bezos the right to operate an extremely forward-looking charitable venture on the theory that at some future point it will acquire monopoly pricing power and start screwing us all."

Go read it all.

Daniel Handler Gives the Best Quotes Ever

I've already set one quote from this interview to run as "Quote of the Week" this Friday, and here's another wonderful thing that works perfectly well out of context:
So my best job that I had before I was published was when I was an executive assistant to a man that was dying in the hospital. So I had absolutely nothing to do but sit in an office, and occasionally the phone would ring from increasingly distant business acquaintances, and I would have to explain to them in muted tones that he was sick and not likely to come back to the office at all. But the rest of the time I worked on my novel. And I actually think the kind of aura of doom that hung over it was very helpful to me as a beginning novelist as well. So I guess I could suggest: Try to work for someone who’s dying. You get a lot of time.

Honestly, you should just go read the whole thing. (Says the man who plans to both read "Who Could That Be at This Hour?" and re-read The Basic Eight on his upcoming vacation.)

Today's Quote

"Honest people in the financial sector should be up in arms about the behavior of Barclays and other megabanks."
- Simon Johnson, in the New York Times' Economix blog

You now have to picture me laughing so hard that I can't control simple bodily fuctions.

I mean -- "honest people in the financial sector"? Pull the other one!
